The Favor (NR)
Frank Wood,Ryan Donowho - 110 min.
|
Frank Wood turns in a powerful, understated performance as Lawrence Hull, a middle-aged bachelor who lives a quiet existence with his dog in Bayonne, New Jersey, and works as a pet photographer and a clerk at the local police station. When his high-school "sweetheart" calls him one day, Lawrence's life takes on a new dimension and romantic memories come to life. He reconnects with the now-divorced Caroline, but loses her all over again when she dies in a freak accident shortly after. Lawrence forms an unexpected attachment to her son, a 16-year-old malcontent named Johnny, and decides to adopt the boy to prevent him from going into foster care. Lawrence tries hard to be a father to Johnny, but Johnny wants nothing to do with him. Johnny dabbles in drug use and theft, exhibits behavioral problems at school, and hides behind a wall of anger and silence. His only soft spot is for a pretty neighborhood girl named Mariana, with whom he develops a relationship. Eventually Johnny comes to recognize that Lawrence is the father figure he has been searching for.

Professor Lawrence Wetherhold might be imperiously brilliant, monumentally self-possessed and an intellectual giant, but it seems he is sleepwalking through a stunted middle age. A widower, he can't find passion in anything anymore, not even the Victorian Literature in which he's an expert. His collegiate son won't confide in him, and his acid-tongued, teenaged daughter is an overachiever. Then, circumstances conspire to stir him from his deep freeze. His adopted, ne'er-do-well brother, who has perfected the art of freeloading, shows up unexpectedly for an extended stay. At just about the same time, he accidentally encounters his former student, Janet. These two events have consequences for Lawrence and everyone around him.

Ray hates the place, while Ken finds his mind and soul being expanded by the city's beauty and serenity. But the longer they stay waiting for Harry's call, the more surreal their experience becomes. And, when the call from Harry does finally come, Ken and Ray's vacation becomes a life-and-death struggle of darkly comic proportions and surprisingly emotional consequences.

Hermann, Hermann
A Denver Film |
Everyday, Hermann Hermann, a sound and sane man, plays chess in the city
center. One day, I forget when, he encounters a surprise with consequences I
can’t even mention. Arthur is retiring from his job as a detective. On the last case of his
career he comes across
the same character from his very first case. He remembers the man by his
name, a very
beautiful and peculiar name, Hermann Hermann. As if that isn’t enough he
goes poking his
large nose into my.....I digress. It is a completely factual tale that embraces, and disrupts the literature
and past films you call mystery, suspense, documentary, or whatever
other foolish names you have....Damn, I ‘ve said too much. This is a film made in Denver by local actors and filmmakers. The film was
shot with only 700$ in 11 days. It is a fun and suspenseful film that no one
from the Mile High should miss.
